Auditing the graph builder to remove unused transformers (planning does
not need to close provisioners for example), and re-order them. While
many of the transformations are commutative, using the same order
ensures the same behavior between operations when the commutative
property is lost or changed.
When configuring providers, it is normally valid to refer to any value
which is known at apply time. This can include resource instance
attributes, variables, locals, and so on.
The import command has a simpler graph evaluation, which means that
many of these values are unknown. We previously prevented this from
happening by restricting provider configuration references to input
variables (#22862), but this was more restrictive than is necessary.
This commit changes how we verify provider configuration for import.
We no longer inspect the configuration references during graph building,
because this is too early to determine if these values will become known
or not.
Instead, when the provider is configured during evaluation, we
check if the configuration value is wholly known. If not, we fail with a
diagnostic error.
Includes a test case which verifies that providers can now be configured
using locals as well as vars, and an updated test case which verifies
that providers cannot be configured with references to resources.
Replace the graphNodeRoot for the main graph with a nodeCloseModule for
the root module. USe a new transformer as well, so as to not change any
behavior of DynamicExpand graphs.
Closing out the root module like we do with sub modules means we no
longer need the OrphanResourceTransformer, or the NodeDestroyResource.
The old resource destroy logic has mostly moved into the instance nodes,
and the remaining resource node was just for cleanup, which need to be
done again by the module since there isn't always a NodeDestroyResource
to be evaluated.
The more-correct state caused a few tests to fail, which need to be
cleaned up to match the state without empty resource husks.
* import: remove Config from ImportOpts
`Config` in ImportOpts was any provider configuration provided by the
user on the command line. This option has already been removed in favor
of only taking the provider from the configuration loaded in the current
context.
* terrafrom: add Config to ImportStateTransformer and refactor Transform
to get the resource provider FQN from the Config
* add Config to AttachSchemaTransformer for providerFqn lookup
* terraform: refactor ProvidedBy() to return nil when provider is not set
in config or state
There was an order-of-operations bug where the import graph builder was
validating that the provider did not have any resource references before
references were actually being attached. This PR fixes the order of
operations and adds a test (in the command package).

* command/import: properly use `-provider` supplied on the command line
The import command now attaches the provider configuration in the resource
instance, if set. That config is attached to the NodeAbstractResource
during the import graph building. This prevents errors when the implied
provider is not actually in the configuration at all, which may happen
when a configuration is using the `-beta` version of a provider (and
only that `-beta` version).

The prior commit changed the schema-access model so that all schemas are
fetched up front during context creation and are then readily available
for use throughout graph building and evaluation.
As a result, we no longer need to create dependency edges to a provider
when one of its resources is referenced by another node, and so the
ProviderTransformer needs only to worry about direct ownership
dependencies.
This also avoids the need for us to run AttachSchemaTransformer twice,
since ProviderTransformer no longer needs schema and we can therefore
defer attaching until just before ReferenceTransformer, when all of the
referencable and referencing nodes are already present in the graph.
Both ProviderTransformer and ReferenceTransformer need schema information,
and so there's a chicken-and-egg problem here where previously the schemas
were not getting attached to provider nodes created during
ProviderTransformer.
As a stop-gap measure for now we'll just run AttachSchemaTransformer
twice, so we can catch any new nodes created during the provider
transforms.
Previously we fetched schemas during the AttachSchemaTransformer,
potentially multiple times as that was re-run for each graph built. Now
we fetch the schemas just once during context construction, passing that
result into each of the graph builders.
This only addresses the schema accesses during graph construction. We're
still separately loading schemas during the main walk for evaluation
purposes. This will be addressed in a later commit.
During import we constrain provider configuration to allow only references
to variables, but since provider configurations in child modules might
refer to variables from the parent, we still need to include the module
variables, outputs and locals in the graph here and attach the provider
schemas.
In future a better check would be that the provider configuration doesn't
refer to anything that is currently unknown, but we'll save that for
another day.
Due to how deeply the configuration types go into Terraform Core, there
isn't a great way to switch out to HCL2 gradually. As a consequence, this
huge commit gets us from the old state to a _compilable_ new state, but
does not yet attempt to fix any tests and has a number of known missing
parts and bugs. We will continue to iterate on this in forthcoming
commits, heading back towards passing tests and making Terraform
fully-functional again.
The three main goals here are:
- Use the configuration models from the "configs" package instead of the
older models in the "config" package, which is now deprecated and
preserved only to help us write our migration tool.
- Do expression inspection and evaluation using the functionality of the
new "lang" package, instead of the Interpolator type and related
functionality in the main "terraform" package.
- Represent addresses of various objects using types in the addrs package,
rather than hand-constructed strings. This is not critical to support
the above, but was a big help during the implementation of these other
points since it made it much more explicit what kind of address is
expected in each context.
Since our new packages are built to accommodate some future planned
features that are not yet implemented (e.g. the "for_each" argument on
resources, "count"/"for_each" on modules), and since there's still a fair
amount of functionality still using old-style APIs, there is a moderate
amount of shimming here to connect new assumptions with old, hopefully in
a way that makes it easier to find and eliminate these shims later.
I apologize in advance to the person who inevitably just found this huge
commit while spelunking through the commit history.
This turned out to be a big messy commit, since the way providers are
referenced is tightly coupled throughout the code. That starts to unify
how providers are referenced, using the format output node Name method.
Add a new field to the internal resource data types called
ResolvedProvider. This is set by a new setter method SetProvider when a
resource is connected to a provider during graph creation. This allows
us to later lookup the provider instance a resource is connected to,
without requiring it to have the same module path.
The InitProvider context method now takes 2 arguments, one if the
provider type and the second is the full name of the provider. While the
provider type could still be parsed from the full name, this makes it
more explicit and, and changes to the name format won't effect this
code.
Fixes#11212
The import graph builder was missing the transform to setup links to
parent providers, so provider inheritance didn't work properly. This
adds that.
This also removes the `PruneProviderTransform` since that has no value
in this graph since we'll never add an unused provider.
Ensure that each instance of BasucGraphBuilder gets a name corresponding
to the Builder which created it. This allows us to differentiate the
graphs in the logs.
This uses the new NodeApplyableProvider graph nodes. This will just make
it easier for us in the future to adopt new graph transforms by starting
to use the new ones here.
