`@ember/jquery` was necessary to automate the `app.import()` but
that is no longer necessary with `ember-auto-import`. A secondary
thing it does is bringing back the `this.$` feature, but with a
deprecation. It is my understanding that the deprecation has long
be fully absorbed into both core and plugins so we shouldn't need
this package anymore.
As of #23867 this is now a real package, so updating the imports to
use the real package name, rather than relying on the alias. The
name change in the package name is because `I18n` is not a valid
name as NPM packages must be all lowercase.
This commit also introduces an eslint rule to prevent importing from
the old I18n path.
For themes/plugins, the old 'i18n' name remains functional.
We'll probably have to keep the globals around for compatibility, but we should always import it ourselves. We'll followup with an updated eslint config to enforce this.
Currently, `window.I18n` is defined in an old school hand written
script, inlined into locale/*.js by the Rails asset pipeline, and
then the global variable is shimmed into a pseudo AMD module later
in `module-shims.js`.
This approach has some problems – for one thing, when we add a new
V2 addon (e.g. in #23859), Embroider/Webpack is stricter about its
dependencies and won't let you `import from "I18n";` when `"I18n"`
isn't listed as one of its `dependencies` or `peerDependencies`.
This moves `I18n` into a real package – `discourse-i18n`. (I was
originally planning to keep the `I18n` name since it's a private
package anyway, but NPM packages are supposed to have lower case
names and that may cause problems with other tools.)
This package defines and exports a regular class, but also defines
the default global instance for backwards compatibility. We should
use the exported class in tests to make one-off instances without
mutating the global instance and having to clean it up after the
test run. However, I did not attempt that refactor in this PR.
Since `discourse-i18n` is now included by the app, the locale
scripts needs to be loaded after the app chunks. Since no "real"
work happens until later on when we kick things off in the boot
script, the order in which the script tags appear shouldn't be a
problem. Alternatively, we can rework the locale bundles to be more
lazy like everything else, and require/import them into the app.
I avoided renaming the imports in this commit since that would be
quite noisy and drowns out the actual changes here. Instead, I used
a Webpack alias to redirect the current `"I18n"` import to the new
package for the time being. In a separate commit later on, I'll
rename all the imports in oneshot and remove the alias. As always,
plugins and the legacy bundles (admin/wizard) still relies on the
runtime AMD shims regardless.
For the most part, I avoided refactoring the actual I18n code too
much other than making it a class, and some light stuff like `var`
into `let`.
However, now that it is in a reasonable format to work with (no
longer inside the global script context!) it may also be a good
opportunity to refactor and make clear what is intended to be
public API vs internal implementation details.
Speaking of, I took the librety to make `PLACEHOLDER`, `SEPARATOR`
and `I18nMissingInterpolationArgument` actual constants since it
seemed pretty clear to me those were just previously stashed on to
the `I18n` global to avoid polluting the global namespace, rather
than something we expect the consumers to set/replace.
`escape` from `pretty-text/sanitizer` is a re-export of the same
function defined in `discourse-common`. Updating the import paths
across the codebase to use the `discourse-common` import path.
`escape` is a rather simple function that can be accomplished with
a regular expression in `discourse-common`.
On the other hand, the remaining parts in `pretty-text/sanitizer`
has a lot of code, PLUS it depend on the rather heavy "xss" NPM
library.
Currently, most of the consumers of `pretty-text/sanitizer` are of
the `{ escape }` varient. This is resolved by this PR.
The remaining usages are either:
1. via/through `PrettyText` which is essentially gated behind
loading the markdown-it bundle, OR
2. via `sanitize` from `discourse/lib/text`
I believe we may ultimately be able to move all the usages to behind
the markdown-it bundle (or, equivilantly, set up another lazy bundle
for `sanitize`) and be able to shed the sanitization code and the
"xss" library from the initial page load.
`discourse/lib/text` also defines a `sanitizeAsync` which is gated
behind loading the markdown-it bundle.
Looking through the usages of `sanitize`, I believe most of these
can be safely switched to use `sanitizeAsync`, in that they are
already in an asynchrnous path that handles a server response. Most
of them are actually rendering a piece of server-generated HTML
message as flash message, so I am not sure there really is value in
sanitizing (we should be able to trust our own server?), but in any
case, code-wise, they should already be able to absorb the async
just fine.
I am not sure if `sanitize` and `sanitizeAsync` are actually API
compatible – they both take `options` but I think those `options` do
pretty different things. This is somethign for another person to
investigate down the road in another PR.
According to `all-the-plugins`, `discourse-graphviz` also import
from this location, so perhaps we should PR to update. That being
said, it doesn't really hurt anything to keep the alias around for
a while.
This started out as a seemingly benign refactor to replace the
`require` for `withPluginApi` to an actual import. However, it
broke the test in seemingly random places.
It turns out that in serveral places, we are calling `isTesting()`
in module scope and assigning the result to a constant. For example
we do that in the composer service to disable checking drafts when
testing.
This is problematic because `isTesting` doesn't really set until
the `discourse-bootstrap` initializer is run, and so any modules
that are evaluated before then will have locked in the wrong value
for `isTesting()`.
If we are going to use and treat `isTesting()` like a constant then
we will have to make sure we set it sufficiently early before any
code-loading happens.
favicons were removed in #17477
theme-preview appears to once be a `.hbs` file shared by several
components, which went away with the refactor in #20282. It must
have accidentally came back with some rebase error, and then got
picked up by the template-only component codemod. It's unused and
does nothing anyway.
It seems like the intention is to update the tab selection at the bottom when the scrollable pane changes enough. In my testing (and I think by definition?), it doesn't seem like `scrollLeft` ever exceeds `offsetWidth`, so that tab-switching behavior doesn't ever happen
Discourse core now builds and runs with Embroider! This commit adds
the Embroider-based build pipeline (`USE_EMBROIDER=1`) and start
testing it on CI.
The new pipeline uses Embroider's compat mode + webpack bundler to
build discourse code, and leave everything else (admin, wizard,
markdown-it, plugins, etc) exactly the same using the existing
Broccoli-based build as external bundles (<script> tags), passed
to the build as `extraPublicTress` (which just means they get
placed in the `/public` folder).
At runtime, these "external" bundles are glued back together with
`loader.js`. Specifically, the external bundles are compiled as
AMD modules (just as they were before) and registered with the
global `loader.js` instance. They expect their `import`s (outside
of whatever is included in the bundle) to be already available in
the `loader.js` runtime registry.
In the classic build, _every_ module gets compiled into AMD and
gets added to the `loader.js` runtime registry. In Embroider,
the goal is to do this as little as possible, to give the bundler
more flexibility to optimize modules, or omit them entirely if it
is confident that the module is unused (i.e. tree-shaking).
Even in the most compatible mode, there are cases where Embroider
is confident enough to omit modules in the runtime `loader.js`
registry (notably, "auto-imported" non-addon NPM packages). So we
have to be mindful of that an manage those dependencies ourselves,
as seen in #22703.
In the longer term, we will look into using modern features (such
as `import()`) to express these inter-dependencies.
This will only be behind a flag for a short period of time while we
perform some final testing. Within the next few weeks, we intend
to enable by default and remove the flag.

This resolves the issue in #23064.
This issue arises because we need to produce the trees for the
auxilary bundles in `ember-cli-build.js` to pass these trees as
argument to `app.toTree()`. In order to produce these trees, the
code internally need to set up babel, which deep-clones the addons'
babel configs.
When using `@embroider/macros`, the addon's babel config includes a
`MacrosConfig` object which is not supposed to be touched until the
configs are "finalized". In a classic build, the finalization step
happens when `app.toTree()` is called. In Embroider, this happens
somewhere deeper inside `CompatApp`.
We need to produce these auxilary bundle trees before we call
`app.toTree()` or before constructing `CompatApp` because they
need to be passed as arguments to these functions. So this poses a
tricky chicken-and-egg timing issue. It was difficult to find a
workaround for this that works for both the classic and Embroider
build pipeline.
Of all the internal addons that uses the auxilary bundle pattern,
this only affets `pretty-text` as it is (for now, at least) the
only addon that uses `@embroider/macros`.
Taking a step back, the only reason (for now, at least) it was
introduced was for the loader shim for the `xss` package. This
package is actually used inside the lazily loaded markdown-it
bundle. However, we didn't have a better way to include the dep
into the lazy bundle directly, so it ends up going into the main
addon tree, and, inturns, the discourse core bundle.
In core's main loader shim manifest, we already have an entry for
`xss`. This was perhaps a mistake at the time, but it doesn't make
a difference – as mentioned above, `xss` needs to be included into
the main bundle anyway.
So, for now, the simpliest solution is to avoid `@embroider/macros`
in these internal addons for the time being. Ideally we would soon
absorb these back into core as lazily loaded (`import()`-ed) code
managed by Webpack when we fully switch over to Embroider.
The previous version of ember-on-resize-modifier depended on
ember-modifier@^3.2.7 while discourse had ember-modifier@^4.1.0.
As far as Yarn is concerned, it can accomplish this with:

This does NOT work!
In a classic build everything is compiled down to AMD modules and
at runtime there can only be one uniquely named "ember-modifier"
module. When we have duplicates, depending on activation ordering,
one of them will randomly win.
In practice, it seems like ember-modifier 3.2.7 had "won" in the
current build, and we are shipping it to production, you can find
these modules in vendor.js like:

* We are brining both copies into the production build
* The 3.2.7 modules are available in the AMD loader as "ember-modifier/..."
* But 4.1.0 modules are available in the AMD loader as "ember-modifier"
* Because mostly it's consumed as `import ... from "ember-modifier";`, the
latter end up actually winning
* Because the newer code is compatible enough, and the deprecated features
are unused, it seems to work ok..?
But in the Embroider build, ember-auto-import doesn't emit those shims
anymore. It does process most of the core modules through Webpack so the
imports get correctly wired up to the 4.1.0 as expected, as they no longer
go through/need the runtime AMD loader.js.
The older 3.2.7 copy is _still_ shipped in the vendor bundle and registered
the same, but not "stomped over" by the EAI shims anymore. Our manual shims
(#22703, merged yesterday) are more "polite" and check `require.has(...)`
before defining the module, and since `require.has(...)` check for the
`/index` alias and returns `true`, our shim does not stomp the 3.2.7 modules
either.
So then, when our "auxilary bundles" (admin, plugins, etc) tries to import
`"ember-modifier", they get the 3.2.7 version.
This adds a new `loaderShim()` function to ensure certain modules
are present in the `loader.js` registry and therefore runtime
`require()`-able.
Currently, the classic build pipeline puts a lot of things in the
runtime `loader.js` registry automatically. For example, all of
the ember-auto-import packages are in there.
Going forward, and especially as we switch to the Embroider build
pipeline, this will not be guarenteed. We need to keep an eye on
what modules (packages) our "external" bundles (admin, wizard,
markdown-it, plugins, etc) are expecting to be present and put
them into the registry proactively.
This brings them more in line with an idiomatic ember app looks
like, in particular, embroider really expects the CSS file to be
there.
As far as I can tell this is fairly harmless, since in production
the actual HTML is generated and served by Rails anyway.
Down the road, this may also be a good alternative to hacking the
build pipeline to bring in styles for tests.
This babel plugin is intended to supress the deprecation warnings
from building plugins, however, discourse-plugins does not actually
consume this plugin at all. Currently this happens to work due to
how the babel worker processes are shared and the timing/ordering
of the build, but it will stop working with the embroider build.
This commit extracts the plugin the a shared package so that it
can be properly consumed by discourse-plugins as well as core.
The primary motivation is to simplify `eagerLoadRawTemplateModules` which curently introspects the module dependencies (the `imports` at runtime). This is no longer supported in Embroider as the AMD shims do not have any dependencies (since it's managed internally with webpack).
- Unify the silencing methods, use a WeakMap to remember the seen objects
- Export a proper plugin and use the absolute path in the config, instead
of the proprietary config from `broccoli-babel-transpiler`
The latter causes problems in Embroider which doesn't use the broccoli
based babel pipeline.
Generally follows the same pattern as #22520
There are some changes here, notably it uses the addon's babel
settings rather than the app's, and it goes through the same
treatment as the rest of the addon code (which may include more
than just babel).
However, this probably brings us closer to the normal expectations
you have around developing addon code, and in any case, does not
seem to have any effect on the final output:

Currently, the admin/wizard build relies on the addon build getting
triggered first, so that its `treeForAddon()` hook will be called,
and then it can stash the result on the app's options, which is
super fragile. In Embroider the timing works differently so the
trees end up being `undefined`.
This inverts the logic so that it will be discourse core's build
calling these hooks at a specific timing and return the result
rather than coordinating through the options bag.

Currently the I18n module shim return an object. Per AMD/loader.js,
the properties on the object becomes named exports of the module,
i.e. `import { t } from 'I18n';`.
However, this is not how we actually consume this module. We always
do `import I18n from 'I18n';`.
The returned object from the shim (`window.I18n`) does NOT have a
`default` property on it. This is only working because loader.js
has a `makeDefaultExport` feature that defaults to true, which we
are relying on to synthesize the default export for us.
That feature has been noted as undesirable and may some day be
deprecated. In Embroider, it specifically disables the feature in
loader.js.

For historical reasons, Discourse has different initializers conventions than standard Ember:

In addition, the arguments to the initialize function is different – Ember initializers get either the `Application` or `ApplicationInstance` as the only argument, but the "Discourse style" gets an extra container argument preceding that.
This is confusing, but it also causes problems with Ember addons, which expects the standard naming and argument conventions:
1. Typically, V1 addons will define their (app, instance) initializers in the `addon/(instance-)initializers/*`, which appears as `ember-some-addon-package-name/(instance-)initializers/*` in the require registry.
2. Just having those modules defined isn't supposed to do anything, so typically they also re-export them in `app/(instance-)initializers/*`, which gets merged into `discourse/(instance-)initializers/*` in the require registry.
3. The `ember-cli-load-initializers` package supplies a function called `loadInitializers`, which typically gets called in `app.js` to load the initializers according to the conventions above. Since we don't follow the same conventions, we can't use this function and instead have custom code in `app.js`, loosely based on official version but attempts to account for the different conventions.
The custom code that loads initializers is written with Discourse core and plug-ins/themes in mind, but does not take into account the fact that addons can also bring initializers, which causes the following problems:
* It does not check for the `discourse/` module prefix, so initializers in the `addon/` folders (point 1 above) get picked up as well. This means the initializer code is probably registered twice (once from the `addon/` folder, once from the `app/` re-export). This either causes a dev mode assertion (if they have the same name) or causes the code to run twice (if they have different names somehow).
* In modern Ember blueprints, it is customary to omit the `"name"` of the initializer since `ember-cli-load-initializers` can infer it from the module name. Our custom code does not do this and causes a dev mode assertion instead.
* It runs what then addon intends to be application initializers as instance initializers due to the naming difference. There is at least one known case of this where the `ember-export-application-global` application initialize is currently incorrectly registered as an instance initializer. (It happens to not use the `/addon` folder convention and explicitly names the initializer, so it does not trigger the previous error scenarios.)
* It runs the initializers with the wrong arguments. If all the addon initializer does is lookup stuff from the container, it happens to work, otherwise... ???
* It does not check for the `/instance-initializers/` module path so any instance initializers introduced by addons are silently ignored.
These issues were discovered when trying to install an addon that brings an application initializer in #22023.
To resolve these issues, this commit:
* Migrates Discourse core to use the standard Ember conventions – both in the naming and the arguments of the initialize function
* Updates the custom code for loading initializers:
* For Discourse core, it essentially does the same thing as `ember-cli-load-initializers`
* For plugins and themes, it preserves the existing Discourse conventions and semantics (to be revisited at a later time)
This ensures that going forward, Ember addons will function correctly.
As far as I can tell, sprockets has always expected the third argument to be a
`Pathname` object. Not sure what actually changed and why it was working before,
but it now throws a `NoMethodError` for `dirname` on `String` in
`Context#resolve`
# , not sure why this was working before
Starting from Rails 4.2, calling MyMailer.some_method no longer result in an
immediate call to MyMailer#some_method. Instead, a "lazy proxy" is returned
(this is changed to support #deliver_later). As a quick hack to fix the test,
calling #message (or anything, really) would force the Mailer object to be
created and the method invoked.
The documentation said that the unit for this setting is in *hours*, but the
code is treating it as *seconds*. Also, `Numeric#ago` has been deprecated since
Rails 4.1 (precisely to help prevent these kind of bugs) and will go away in
Rails 4.2.
Rails 4.1.6+ will relax the mail gem version requirement to `~> 2.5, >= 2.5.4`.
However, mail gem 2.6.x currently does not work with discourse because of the
reference to `Mail::RFC2822Parser` in `lib/email.rb`. This ensure discourse
would continue to work with Rails 4.1.6+ when it is released.
I am not sure why this is wokring on Rails 4, but the problem is that `post3`
here is holding on to an old reference of some associations so `PostDestroyer`
is not doing the right thing.
The `as_json` API is a hook for JSON encoders to call, not meant for
consumption like this, and the result is not guarenteed to be stable
across Rails versions.
There might be other cases like this that we should revisit later, but
this one in particular is causing a test to fail on Rails master.
