We're changing the implementation of trust levels to use groups. Part of this is to have site settings that reference trust levels use groups instead. It converts the min_trust_level_to_allow_user_card_background site setting to user_card_background_allowed_groups.
Nothing of note here. This is used in exactly one place, and there's no fallout.
This validator is used for site settings where one or more groups are to be input.
At the moment this validator just checks that the value isn't blank. This PR adds a validation for the existence of the groups passed in.

We're seeing some deprecation warnings in production. This is because we're passing a raw Ruby timestamp, which gets stringified implicitly when written to Redis. As per #15842, this conversion needs to be done explicitly.
We updated scheduled admin checks to run concurrently in their own jobs. The main reason for this was so that we can implement re-check functionality for especially flaky checks (e.g. group e-mail credentials check.)
This works in the following way:
1. The check declares its retry policy using class methods.
2. A block can be yielded to if there are problems, but before they are committed to Redis.
3. The job uses this block to either a) schedule a retry if there are any remaining or b) do nothing and let the check commit.
This PR does some preparatory refactoring of scheduled admin checks in order for us to be able to do custom retry strategies for some of them.
Instead of running all checks in sequence inside a single, scheduled job, the scheduled job spawns one new job per check.
In order to be concurrency-safe, we need to change the existing Redis data structure from a string (of serialized JSON) to a list of strings (of serialized JSON).
As part of #23816, which sought to strip out thousand separators, we also accidentally strip out signs. This is making it impossible to disable some settings which require a -1 to disable. Instead of stripping non-digits, strip anything that isn't a sign or a digit.
The User#flag_level column has not been in use for a very long time. The "new" reviewable system dynamically calculates flag scores based on past performance of the user.
This PR removes flag_level from the admin user serializer (since it isn't displayed anywhere in admin user lists) and marks the column as deprecated and targeted for removal in the next minor version.
The message: :signup_not_allowed option to the IP address validator does nothing, because the AllowedIpAddressValidator chooses one of either:
- ip_address.blocked or
- ip_address.max_new_accounts_per_registration_ip
internally. This means that the translation for this was also never used.
This PR removes the ineffectual option and the unused translation. It also moves the translated error messages for blocked and max_new_accounts_per_registration_ip into the correct location so we can pass a symbol to ActiveModel::Errors#add.
There is no actual change in behaviour.
The EmailValidator.email_regex method was moved to EmailAddressValidator.email_regex and marked for removal in 2.9.0. The method was proxied for backwards compatibility in plugins. This PR removes the method.
The #pluck_first method got a replacement in ActiveRecord core named #pick. After a bunch of replacements in core and plugins, we are now ready to retire this freedom patch.
Using SiteSetting.queue_jobs= to configure job asynchronicity was deprecated here four years ago and marked for removal in version 2.9.0. This PR removes the fallback method we kept since then. The method was there because it was still being used in a bunch of plugin tests (now fixed.)
The PostAction.remove_act class method has been deprecated and replaced by PostActionDestroyer. It was marked for removal in version 2.9.0. This PR removes the method.
The UrlHelper#escape_uri helper has been deprecated and replaced by UrlHelper#normalized_encode, and was marked for removal in 3.0. This PR removes the method.
We have a custom implementation of #symbolize_keys in our Onebox helpers. This is likely a legacy from when Onebox was a standalone gem. This change replaces all usages with either #deep_symbolize_keys from ActiveSupport, or appropriate option to the JSON parser gem used.

This change replaces all usages with respective incarnations of #blank?, #present?, and #presence from ActiveSupport. It changes a bunch of "unless blank" to "if present" as well.
Currently, if you set an integer site setting in the admin interface and include thousands separators, you will silently configure the wrong value.
This PR replaces TextField inputs for integer site settings with NumberField. It also cleans the numeric input of any non-digits in the backend in case any separators make it through.
This PR converts the post notice modal from the old template + controller to a modern Glimmer + DModal component.
In addition to the conversion, I added a condition so that when editing a staff notice, the save button is disabled as long as no changes have been made.
The num_users_to_silence_new_user setting is referencing num_spam_flags_to_silence_new_user, which has been superceded twice.
This change updates the description to reflect that it now operates on the new "sensitivity score" system.
When navigating between renewables through the Ember router, e.g. through the links in the notifications menu the body of the reviewable (rendered by the CookText component) won't update, resulting in the same post body incorrectly being shown for all subsequent reviewables.
This is happening because there is no update path between the rawText attribute being passed to CookText and the computed cooked attribute, since this is being set explicitly using an async function.
This PR adds the missing link between rawText and cooked by listening for didUpdate and triggering the async function.
Currently moderators can see the custom public sidebar section edit button, but they are prevented from making any changes by an error. According to the back-end, moderators can not access these.
This PR hides the custom public sidebar section edit button, as well as the "make public" checkbox of the create modal, if the user is not an admin, bringing the UI in line with the back-end.
If needed, we can add a site setting to allow moderator access when the need arises.
This is an aesthetic change. Currently, if one of the scores involved in the reviewable score explanation is negative, we display it as: + -value. This changes that.
I also made an attempt at converting the component into GJS format. This is done as a separate commit.
In #20135 we prevented invalid inputs from being accepted in category setting form fields on the front-end. We didn't do anything on the back-end at that time, because we were still discussing which path we wanted to take. Eventually we decided we want to move this to a new CategorySetting model.
This PR moves the require_topic_approval and require_reply_approval from custom fields to the new CategorySetting model.
This PR is nearly identical to #20580, which migrated num_auto_bump_daily, but since these are slightly more sensitive, they are moved after the previous one is verified.
We have one site setting, `auto_silence_fast_typers_max_trust_level`, which expects a trust level. However, the type is set to integer, which makes it very hard for a layman to enter the correct thing.
This PR changes the type of the site setting to the `TrustLevelSetting` enum.
The use of these are interchangeable in the back-end, since `SiteSetting.auto_silence_fast_typers_max_trust_level` still returns the integer value with the enum.
Currently, if the review queue has both a flagged post and a flagged chat message, one of the two will have some of the labels of their actions replaced by those of the other. In other words, the labels are getting mixed up. For example, a flagged chat message might show up with an action labelled "Delete post".
This is happening because when using bundles, we are sending along the actions in a separate part of the response, so they can be shared by many reviewables. The bundles then index into this bag of actions by their ID, which is something generic describing the server action, e.g. "agree_and_delete".
The problem here is the same action can have different labels depending on the type of reviewable. Now that the bag of actions contains multiple actions with the same ID, which one is chosen is arbitrary. I.e. it doesn't distinguish based on the type of the reviewable.
This change adds an additional field to the actions, server_action, which now contains what used to be the ID. Meanwhile, the ID has been turned into a concatenation of the reviewable type and the server action, e.g. post-agree_and_delete.
This still provides the upside of denormalizing the actions while allowing for different reviewable types to have different labels and descriptions.
At first I thought I would prepend the reviewable type to the ID, but this doesn't work well because the ID is used on the server-side to determine which actions are possible, and these need to be shared between different reviewables. Hence the introduction of server_action, which now serves that purpose.
I also thought about changing the way that the bundle indexes into the bag of actions, but this is happening through some EmberJS mechanism, so we don't own that code.
We're seeing a large number of log noise from this endpoint due to malicious scanners that are trying to send clever params and seeing if they can break something.
This change simply rescues any NoMethodError during parameter parsing and re-raises a Discourse::InvalidParameters exception, which will be caught and render a 400.
Chat review queue flags were missing the context message above the actions.
This is probably because the (reasonably complex) logic was somewhat hard-coded to posts. After some investigation I concluded we can reuse this logic with some small amendments.
This moves the "delete message" action (if it is available) of a flagged chat message under the "ignore" menu. This puts it on par with the menu for flagged posts.
When flagging a chat message, and options included both notifying user and notifying staff, the modal was missing the separating text. This was happening because the #staffFlagsAvailable method was based on post flags, and the model for chat flags is slightly different. This fixes that by delegating to the relevant flag target object.
Follow-up to #23199 in which we moved the "delete user" options under the relevant action menu for flagged post. This change does the same, but to queued posts.
In #22914 we added a fix to stop creating reviewables in the review queue when flagging a chat message and choosing the "notify user" option. By mistake we also stopped creating it when selecting the "something else" option.
This change makes it so a "something else" flag once again creates a reviewable. (Same behaviour as posts.)
We have been discussing potentially adding a Procfile to help launch the application. As part of the discussions, @tgxworld also mentioned it'd be nice to have a command to launch the app in development.
This allows us to encode how to start the app in code and ship that in the repo, rather than having to rely on external documentation.
Newer installs of Rails come with a bin/dev script for exactly this purpose. This change adds one in retroactively for us.
The script currently runs bin/ember-cli -u, which is the canonical way of starting the app for development according to documentation. I know not everyone uses this, but the point of this PR is to add the script first, then we can iterate on the means of running the app. 🙂
As per discussion, we want to move the options to delete the user under the "Yes" menu of the review queue, since these options are often the most recommended, but also frequently missed because they are tucked away under their own menu.
In addition to the move, I removed the title case of the options so that it matches the other options in the "Yes" menu.
In most cases, deleting a user from outside the review UI will also delete any pending reviewables for that user. This was not working in some cases, e.g. for reviewables created due to "fast typer" violations.
This was happening because UserDestroyer only automatically resolves flagged posts.
After this change, in addition to existing checks, look for ReviewablePost where the post was created by the user and reject them if present.
When hiding a post (essentially updating hidden, hidden_at, and hidden_reason_id) our callbacks are running the whole battery of post validations. This can cause the hiding to fail in a number of edge cases. The issue is similar to the one fixed in #11680, but applies to all post validations, none of which should apply when hiding a post.
After some code reading and discussion, none of the validations in PostValidator seem to be relevant when hiding posts, so instead of just skipping unique check, we skip all post validator checks.
Currently when we decide we're going to drop a column in the future we just mark it with a TODO comment and add it to ignored_columns. This makes it instantly unavailable, and we mostly forget about the TODO in the end. 😬
This change adds a HasDeprecatedColumns concern which offers a little bit more flexibility. We can still simulate the old behaviour by setting drop_from to the current version, but we can also set it to a future version, causing it to raise a deprecation warning until then if used.
This migration that populates category setting data from custom fields did not account for the fact that custom fields that expect an integer can still be an empty string. An empty string can't be inserted into the new integer type column.
If the setting is an empty string, cast it to NULL.

We currently are accumulating orphaned upload references whenever drafts are deleted.
This change deals with future cases by adding a dependent strategy of delete_all on the Draft#upload_references association. (We don't really need destroy strategy here, since UploadReference is a simple data bag and there are no validations or callbacks on the model.)
It deals with existing cases through a migration that deletes all existing, orphaned draft upload references.
We recently added a "don't feed the trolls" feature which warns you about interacting with posts that have been flagged and are pending review. The problem is the warning persists even if an admin reviews the post and rejects the flag.
After this change we only consider active flags when deciding whether to show the warning or not.
We're seeing unhandled errors in production when web push notifications are failing with an SSL error. This is happening for a few users, but generating a large amount of log noise due to the sheer number of notifications.
This adds handling of SSL errors in two places:
1. In FinalDestination::HTTP, this is handled the same as a timeout error, and gives a chance to recover.
2. In PushNotificationPusher. This will cause the notification to retry a number of times, and if it keeps failing, disable push notifications for the user. (Existing behaviour.)
I wanted to wrap the SSL error in e.g. WebPush::RequestError, but the gem doesn't have request error handling, so didn't want to have the freedom patch diverge from the gem as well. Instead just propagating the raw SSL error.
We recently replaced another ignore user modal with a Glimmer and DModal based component. This change makes use of that same component in the user card ignore modal by adding an enableSelection flag.
The parameter ascending was deprecated (replaced by asc) and marked for deletion in 2.9. This PR removes it. Since the resulting code was a simple one-liner, the method body was inlined instead.
We deprecated the keywords method, route, and format (replaced with methods, actions, and formats respectively) as parameters to Plugin::Instance#add_api_parameter_route, marked for removal in 2.7. This PR deletes them.
After deleting SiteSetting::ALLOWLIST_DEPRECATED_SITE_SETTINGS, we found out this was referenced in a migration file. This PR inlines the constant into the migration file to prevent it from erroring out.
These methods were deprecated and marked for removal in 2.6. This change deletes them.
These deprecations use raise_error: true, so the fallbacks are at this point unreachable and can't be used anyway.
Recently we started giving admins a notice in the advice panel when their translations have become outdated due to changes in core. However, we didn't include any additional information.
This PR adds more information about the outdated translation inside the site text edit page, together with an option to dismiss the warning.
This PR migrates the publish page modal to a Glimmer component and DModal.
Most of the code is lift-and-shift. However, the component state getters were implemented using meta-programming in the original controller. They have all been inlined here for clarity, searchability, etc.
Adding a filter without a type parameter has been deprecated for the last three years, and was marked for removal in 2.9.0.
During this time we have had a few deprecation warnings in logs coming from Reports::Bookmarks.
The fallback was to set the type to the name of the filter. This change just passes the type (same as name) explicitly instead, and removes the deprecation fallback.
We have a number of raw comments indicating that certain methods and classes are deprecated and marked for removal. This change turn those comments into deprecation warnings so that we can 1) see them in the logs of our own hosting and 2) give some warning to self hosters.
We recently introduced this advice to admins when some translation overrides are outdated or using unknown interpolation keys:
However we missed the case where the original translation key has been renamed or altogether removed. When this happens they are no longer visible in the admin interface, leading to the confusing situation where we say there are outdated translations, but none are shown.
Because we don't explicitly handle this case, some deleted translations were incorrectly marked as having unknown interpolation keys. (This is because I18n.t will return a string like "Translation missing: foo", which obviously has no interpolation keys inside.)
This change adds an additional status, deprecated for TranslationOverride, and the job that checks them will check for this status first, taking precedence over invalid_interpolation_keys. Since the advice only checks for the outdated and invalid_interpolation_keys statuses, this fixes the problem.
The attribute Reviewable#post_options was deprecated (and replaced by #payload) four years ago, and marked for deletion in 2.9.0. This commit removes it.
This PR adds a feature to help admins stay up-to-date with their translations. We already have protections preventing admins from problems when they update their overrides. This change adds some protection in the other direction (where translations change in core due to an upgrade) by creating a notice for admins when defaults have changed.
Terms:
- In the case where Discourse core changes the default translation, the translation override is considered "outdated".
- In the case above where interpolation keys were changed from the ones the override is using, it is considered "invalid".
- If none of the above applies, the override is considered "up to date".
How does it work?
There are a few pieces that makes this work:
- When an admin creates or updates a translation override, we store the original translation at the time of write. (This is used to detect changes later on.)
- There is a background job that runs once every day and checks for outdated and invalid overrides, and marks them as such.
- When there are any outdated or invalid overrides, a notice is shown in admin dashboard with a link to the text customization page.
Known limitations
The link from the dashboard links to the default locale text customization page. Given there might be invalid overrides in multiple languages, I'm not sure what we could do here. Consideration for future improvement.
This is the first of a number of PRs aimed at helping admins manage their translation overrides. It simply adds a list of available interpolation keys below the input field when editing an override.
It also includes custom interpolation key.
This change adds support retroactively updating display names in the new quote format when the user's name is changed. It happens through a background job that is triggered by a callback when a user is saved with a new name.
When we introduced the new quote format with full-name display name:

The functional part of this change adds support for the new quote format in the code that updates quotes when a user's username changes. See the test case in `spec/services/username_changer_spec.rb` for the details.
In addition, this change adds a regression test for PrettyText to cover the new quote format, and extracts the code responsible for rewriting raw and cooked quotes into its own `QuoteRewriter` class. The functionality of the latter is tested through the tests in `spec/services/username_changer_spec.rb`.
### What is this change?
The lounge category was replaced with the general category in https://github.com/discourse/discourse/pull/18097.
However, there are still a few references to the lounge category in code. In particular, `Category#seeded?` is erroring out in production looking for `SiteSetting.lounge_category_id`.
In #21498, we split `BaseStore#download` into a "safe" version which returns nil on errors, and an "unsafe" version which raises an exception, which was the old behaviour of `#download`.
This change updates call sites that used the old `#download`, which raised exceptions, to use the new `#download!` to preserve behaviour (and silence deprecation warnings.)
It also silences the deprecation warning in tests.
### What is the problem?
It is possible to pass an arbitrary value to the limit parameter in `TagsController#search`, and have it flow through `DiscourseTagging.filter_allowed_tags` where it will raise an error deep in the database driver. MiniSql ensures there's no injection happening, but that ultimately results in an invalid query.
### How does this fix it?
This change checks more strictly that the parameter can be cleanly converted to an integer by replacing the loose `#to_i` conversion semantics with the stronger `Kernel#Integer` ones.
**Example:**

"1; SELECT 1".to_i
#=> 1
Integer("1; SELECT 1")
#=> ArgumentError
```
As part of the change, I also went ahead to disallow a limit of "0", as that doesn't seem to be a useful option. Previously only negative limits were disallowed.
### Background
When SSRF detection fails, the exception bubbles all the way up, causing a log alert. This isn't actionable, and should instead be ignored. The existing `rescue` does already ignore network errors, but fails to account for SSRF exceptions coming from `FinalDestination`.
### What is this change?
This PR does two things.

Firstly, it introduces a common root exception class, `FinalDestination::SSRFError` for SSRF errors. This serves two functions: 1) it makes it easier to rescue both errors at once, which is generally what one wants to do and 2) prevents having to dig deep into the class hierarchy for the constant.
This change is fully backwards compatible thanks to how inheritance and exception handling works.

Secondly, it rescues this new exception in `UserAvatar.import_url_for_user`, which is causing sporadic errors to be logged in production. After this SSRF errors are handled the same as network errors.
What is the problem?
Consider the following timeline:
1. OP starts a topic.
2. Troll responds snarkily.
3. Flagger flags the post as “inappropriate”.
4. Admin agrees and hides the post.
5. Troll ninja-edits the post within the grace period, but still snarky.
6. Flagger flags the post as inappropriate again.
The current behaviour is that the flagger is met with an error saying the post has been reviewed and can't be flagged again for the same reason.
The desired behaviour is after someone has edited a post, it should be flaggable again.
Why is this happening?
This is related to the ninja-edit feature, where within a set grace period no new revision is created, but a new revision is required to flag the same post for the same reason.
So essentially there is a window between the naughty corner cooldown where a flagged post can't be edited, and the ninja-edit grace period, where an edit can be made without a new revision. Posts that are edited within this window can't be re-flagged by the same user.

How does this fix it?
We already create a new revision when ninja-editing a post with a pending flag. The issue above happens only in the case where the flag is already accepted.
This change extends the existing behaviour so that a new revision is created when ninja-editing any flagged post, regardless of the status of the flag. (Deleted flags excluded.)
This should also help with posterity, avoiding situations where a successfully flagged post looks innocuous in the history because it was ninja-edited, and vice versa.
Responding to negative behaviour tends to solicit more of the same. Common wisdom states: "don't feed the trolls".
This change codifies that advice by introducing a new nudge when hitting the reply button on a flagged post. It will be shown if either the current user, or two other users (configurable via a site setting) have flagged the post.
When selecting the "Keep bookmark" in the user preference for what to do after a bookmark reminder is sent, it does not propagate to the drop-down in the "Create bookmark" modal. Instead it defaults to "Keep bookmark and clear reminder". All other options work fine.
We set a default ("Keep bookmark and clear reminder") if no user preference is found, However, this uses the index of the option, and the index of the first option ("Keep bookmark") is 0, which is treated as falsey in JavaScript, thus causing the default to be selected.
This change switches from logical "or" conditional `||` operator to nullish coalescing `??` operator.
As part of another regression, we realized that the plugins tab is visible to moderators, but they cannot interact with anything inside without triggering authorization errors.
This change hides the plugin tab for non-admin users.
Currently the auto-bump cooldown is hard-coded to 24 hours.
This change makes the highlighted 24 hours part configurable (defaulting to 24 hours), and the rest of the process remains the same.
This uses the new CategorySetting model associated with Category. We decided to add this because we want to move away from custom fields due to the lack of type casting and validations, but we want to keep the loading of these optional as they are not needed for almost all of the flows.
Category settings will be back-filled to all categories as part of this change, and creating a new category will now also create a category setting.
As reported on Meta, the relative time pickers for configuring slow-mode and auto-close durations in category settings are initially showing a "mins" option, which then disappears after you select any other timescale.
Our `RelativeTimePicker` component wasn't equipped to handle `null` values as the initial input. This caused it to go into a code path that set the selected timescale to "mins", even if that is not an allowed option.
There are two things being done here:
1. Add support for `null` input values to `RelativeTimePicker`. This fixes the auto-close setting.
2. Allow minutes for the slow-mode setting. (The user in Meta mentioned they usually set 15-30 minutes to cool down hot topics.
When invoking e.g. `can_see?(Foo.new)`, the guardian checks if there's a method `#can_see_foo?` defined and if so uses that to determine whether the user can see it or not.
When such a method is not defined, the guardian currently returns `true`, but it is probably a better call (pun intended) to make it "safe by default" and return `false` instead. I.e. if you can't explicitly see it, you can't see it at all.
This change makes the change to `Guardian#can_see?` to fall back to `false` if no visibility check method is defined.
For `#can_see_user?` and `#can_see_tag?` we don't have any particular logic that prevents viewing. We previously relied on the implicit `true` value, but since that's now change to `false`, I have explicitly implemented these two methods in `UserGuardian` and `TagGuardian` modules. If in the future we want to add some logic for it, this would be the place.
To be clear, **the behaviour remains the same**, but the `true` value is now explicit rather than implicit.
ruby-prof 1.6.0 was release, but then yanked, causing Bundler to
fail when installing gems.
This change updgrades ruby-prof to 1.6.1 which was released as a
replacement.
The #pluck_first freedom patch, first introduced by @danielwaterworth has served us well, and is used widely throughout both core and plugins. It seems to have been a common enough use case that Rails 6 introduced it's own method #pick with the exact same implementation. This allows us to retire the freedom patch and switch over to the built-in ActiveRecord method.
There is no replacement for #pluck_first!, but a quick search shows we are using this in a very limited capacity, and in some cases incorrectly (by assuming a nil return rather than an exception), which can quite easily be replaced with #pick plus some extra handling.
This is the first in a multi-part change to move the custom fields to a new table. It includes:
- Adding a new CategorySetting model and corresponding table.
- Populating it with data from the category_custom_fields table.
We recently had a bug which caused auto-bumping to "not work". The problem was that the value had been set to 0.5, which when coerced to an integer turned into 0. So the feature is "working as intended", but there's a possibility of misconfiguration.
When looking into this, I noticed that the inputs on the category settings page doesn't have any particular sanitisation in the front-end, and also one or two validations missing in the back-end.
This change:
- Takes an existing component, NumberField and enhances that by only allowing numeric input, essentially turning it into a managed input using the same approach as our PasswordField.
- Changes the numeric inputs on category settings page to use this component.
- Adds appropriate min constraints to the fields to disallow out-of-range values.
- Adds missing back-end validations to relevant fields.
In the group member bulk edit menu we are displaying staff-only options
to non-staff. The requests are blocked by the back-end, so there is no
harm other than to the user experience.
Notably the individual user edit menu is correctly filtering out
unavailable options. This change brings the bulk edit menu in line with
that.
TL4 users can already list and unlist topics, but they can't see
the unlisted topics. This change brings this to par by allowing
TL4 users to also see unlisted topics.
This is a very subtle one. Setting the redirect URL is done by passing
a hash through a Discourse event. This is broken on Ruby 2 since the
support for keyword arguments in events was added.
In Ruby 2 the last argument is cast to keyword arguments if it is a
hash. The key point here is that creates a new copy of the hash, so
what the plugin is modifying is not the hash that was passed.
We've been doing some work to support new keyword argument semantics in Ruby 3. As part of that we made some changes to `DiscourseEvent::TestHelper`. The backwards compatibility fix doesn't work if the method is called with an empty hash as the final argument. This fix adds a valid option to the final hash in the particular test.
There is an issue where chat message processing breaks due to
unhandles `SocketError` exceptions originating in the SSRF check,
specifically in `FinalDestination::Resolver`.
This change gives `FinalDestination::SSRFDetector` a new error class
to wrap the `SocketError` in, and haves the `RetrieveTitle` class
handle that error gracefully.
Currently the `turbo:spec` task will fail when encountering system
tests as Capypara tries to use the same port for each process.
This simple change uses the same strategy as for databases, by just
incrementing the port number by `TEST_ENV_NUMBER` for each process.
